#Road Construction – Soil Stabilization

 Road Construction – Soil Stabilization

It is important to have a smooth surface and stabilize soil in road construction so that erosion can be prevented.

Selection of stabilization technique should be selected to achieve good soil properties. This selection depends on many factors such as types of soil to be stabilized, Availability of stabilizing materials, Availability of construction equipment, Environmental conditions of that area, Structure of pavement, Volume and distribution of traffic, Period of project, Budget of project. All this factors to be checked to select stabilization method.

Mix design is as important as other factors. Mix design should be done in such a way that great durability and stability can be obtained. Which methods are we using for mix design will also play a major role for stabilization. Additives are added to the mix for meeting the requirements but this will increase cost.

Thickness of stabilized soil layer is again an important factor and design of that is less remarkable in stabilization. The thickness layer is kept equivalent to granular base-course considering the factors such that mix properties, environmental conditions, types of traffic, design period of pavement etc. This factors will not cause any difficulties in stability and durability but if the stabilized mix is weaker than the requisite value, it is not recommended to follow the above-mentioned considerations and the design for thickness should be done separately.

However, there is no separate method to design the thickness of such poor stabilizing mixes. So, the mixes such as soil-cement, pozzolanic concrete etc. are designed as semi-rigid pavements.
